Bahrain appoints new Prime Minister
PBC24 Desk : Bahrain’s Crown Prince Sheikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa has been named the country’s new prime minister on Wednesday. Earlier, Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the country’s prime minister since independence in 1971, died at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in the United States. He was 74 years old.
Bahrain News Agency (BNA) says King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain has appointed his son Sheikh Salman as the new head of the cabinet, following a royal decree. Western-educated Sheikh Salman bin Hamad al-Khalifa is expected to try to build a relationship with the opposition. He has studied in the United States and Britain. He completed his master’s degree from Cambridge University. Sheikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa was the country’s first deputy prime minister. He was also the Deputy Supreme Commander of the Bahraini Defense Forces.
Meanwhile, a week of mourning has been officially declared across the country over the death of Prince Khalifa bin Salan Al Khalifa. His burial will be completed after the body is brought back to the country from the United States. Due to the coronavirus, a certain number of relatives will be present at this time. The national flag will be kept at half-mast during mourning. Besides, government ministries and departments will be closed for three days.
