Processions, demonstrations banned in capital without prior permission: DMP

Amid the ongoing tension regarding sculptures and statues , The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has banned meetings, demonstrations and processions by political and religious organisations without prior permission to ensure security and safety of the dwellers in the capital.

The ban was imposed through a press release signed by DMP Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam on Wednesday. The press release reads that legal actions will be taken against unauthorised gatherings, rallies, demonstrations and use of loudspeakers.

Nowadays it is commonly seen that different parties arrange various social, political, religious gatherings on public roads and use loudspeakers without taking prior permission from the authorities concerned, said the DMP press release.

These types of programmes create hindrance to public movements as those block roads and create traffic congestion.

As per the constitution, any legal political party or community have the rights to organise gatherings or any programmes peacefully without using any arms, but they have to ensure other citizens’ conveniences.

The DMP will take legal actions against these illegal programmes that create hindrance to public movements and safety, the press release further says.

The DMP also asked for public cooperation to ensure public safety and peace in the capital.
