JU authorities relock halls after students broke in
PBC News: Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities have relocked the gates of the halls soon after these were broke open by agitating students of the university.
Members of the university’s proctorial body relocked the entrances to halls on Saturday afternoon.
The decision to reopen the university halls will be taken as per the directions of the Prime Minister and the concerned ministries of the government, said a press releases issued by the university.
“According to the decision of the syndicate, gatherings and visitors are not allowed in the university. The procession of students on campus, the gathering, breaking locks of halls are against the decision of the syndicate. The university is closed in as per the government’s decision. The decision to open the university halls will be taken as per the directions of the Prime Minister and the concerned ministries of the government,” the press release said.
Earlier, students of the university took position in front of the vice-chancellor’s residence in the morning demanding three-point including reopening of halls.
The university acting Proctor ASM Firoz Ul Hasan said they accepted two demands of the students but it is not possible to reopen the halls without getting instructions from the government.
After Proctor’s announcement, the agitated students broke open the locks of all halls.
University Hall Provost Committee President Professor Motahar Hossain said vice chancellor of the university is holding a meeting with the Education Minister in this regard and a decision would be announced following the meeting.
On Friday, several students of the university were injured in an attack by the residents of a village adjacent to the campus.
Four motorcycles belonging to the students were set ablaze by locals at Gerua Bazar in the evening. Later, locals gathered in the area responding to an announcement from a mosque’s loudspeaker and attacked the students.
