SC upholds Erfan’s bail, no bar to release
PBC News: The Supreme Court has upheld the bail granted by the High Court to suspended councilor Erfan Salim in a case over ‘assaulting’ a navy officer in Dhanmondi.

A six-member virtual Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order on Sunday scrapping the state’s petition against the bail.
Additional Attorney General Sheikh Md Morshed and Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Debnath represented the state while lawyers Baset Mazumder and Sayeed Ahmed Raza stood for Erfan.
Now, there is no legal bar for Erfan to come out from jail, his lawyers said.
On Mar 18, the HC granted Erfan’s bail. The state sought to appeal the decision and the chamber judge suspended the bail for four weeks until the case could be heard by the appellate court.
According to tha case statement, on the night of October 25, the accused allegedly beaten and threatened Bangladesh Navy’s Lt Wasif Ahmed Khan.
The following morning, the victim filed an attempt to murder case with Dhanmondi Police Station mentioning the names of Haji Salim MP’s son Erfan, AB Siddique Dipu, Md Jahid and Mizanur Rahman.
On the same day, a mobile court of RAB launched a raid at Salim’s ‘Chan Sardar Dada Bari’ residence in old Dhaka’s Chawkbazar area.
Meanwhile, the government suspended Irfan from the post of councillor on October 27, last year. The Awami League leader’s son has been facing four more cases.
