He alleged that the government has been freeing the death sentence convicts, sending the convicts home who have been given punishment, but doing injustice only to Khaleda Zia being politically vindictive.
Reply to a question, Fakhrul said, “The family has taken all preparations for Khaleda Zia’s treatment abroad. The family would do what they think appropriate in this regard.”
Fakhrul was talking to reporters outside the north gate of Basundhara Residential Area at about 8:15pm on Sunday.
Earlier, he went to see Khaleda Zia at the coronary care unit (CCU) of Evercare Hospital at Basundhara.
He said he saw Khaleda Zia there only for two minutes.
Earlier in the afternoon, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said Khaleda Zia would not be allowed to go abroad as she is a convict.
He said the Law Ministry has rejected the plea seeking the government’s permission to take Khaleda Zia abroad for advanced treatment.
“There is no provision in the related law that permits a convict to go abroad for treatment,” the Home Minister said at a news briefing.
“So, it is not possible for us to do anything outside the law,” he said.
The minister also said: “The Law Ministry has informed us that Khaleda Zia cannot go abroad unless her sentences are commuted. In light of such an opinion, the application of Khaleda Zia’s family could not be granted.”
Law Minister Anisul Huq also said: “I have said in the opinion that Khaleda Zia’s jail sentence has been suspended as per Section 401 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), on condition that she cannot go abroad. Now, there is no scope to relax this condition. Therefore, she cannot go abroad for treatment.”
