Shahin murder planned at former MP Awal’s office
PBC News: Former member of parliament (MP) and Islami Ganatantrik Party chairman MA Awal has been arrested by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Thursday for hacking a youth to death right in front of his minor son at Pallabi in the capital on May 9 last.
Mastermind of the killing and prime accused Awal hatched a plan to kill Shahin with two other accused sitting at his office at Kalabagan in the capital. He directed No. 2 accused Abu Taher and No. 3 accused Sumon to ‘remove Shahin from this world forever.’
It was stated by RAB’s Legal and Media Wing’s director Commander Khondker Al Moyeen while addressing a press conference at the RAB Media Center at Karwan Bazar at about 4:30pm on Thursday (May 20).

He said: “MA Awal, mastermind of the brutal killing of a father in front of his son at the city’s Pallabi area, has been arrested. Accused Abu Taher and Sumon finalised the killing at Awal’s Kalabagan office. Sumon was given the responsibility to implement the plan. Led by Sumon, some 10 to 12 killers took part in the killing.”
Khondker Al Moyeen further said the Intelligence Branch at the RAB Headquarters and RAB-4 personnel arrested Hasan, 19, from Haimchar in Chandpur, mastermind MA Awal, 50, from a mazar at Bhairab sadar, and Jahirul Islam Babu, 27, from Baufal area in Patuakhali on Wednesday night.
Narrating the gruesome murder of Shahin, the RAB official said several killers including Sumon held a meeting on May 15. Accordingly, they assembled at the place of occurence in Pallabi in the afternoon of May 16. Later, they called in 33-year-old Shahin to take part in arbitration meeting.
“Hearing about the arbitration meeting, Shahin came out of his flat and went there along with his minor son. At first, 10 to 12 killers including Sumon, Monir, Manik, Hasan, Iqbal, and Murad swoped on Shahin with sharp knives and started stabbing him indiscriminately. Finally, Mon and Manik ensured Shahin’s death stabbing on his upper and lower parts of the body. At that time, several killers kept vigilance on the nearby road. It took five to seven minutes to commit the murder. Ensuring the murder of Shahin, Sumon gave a call on MA Awal’s cellphone saying “Sir, finished.”
Afterward, the killers left the place and went into hiding at different places of the country.
The RAB official said former MP Awal is a real estate developer who also sells residential plots. He has a residential project where Shahin’s family land also exists. Awal wanted to grab the land. Because of it, he had developed animosity towards Shahin.
Under his patronisation, a terrorist gang led by Sumon used to grab lands of people establishing their supremacy. For this, they used to receive Tk 10,000-Tk 12,000 per month from Awal. The terrorist group is also indulged in extortion, mugging, rickshaws token business, drug peddling and gambling in the area.
The RAB’s Legal and Media Wing’s director also said their drives to arrest other accused were going on.
