EC will face difficuties in conducting polls if NID shifted : CEC
PBC News: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda on Wednesday said that the Election Commission (EC) would face difficulties in conducting elections if the National Identity (NID) card related services are shifted to the Home Ministry.
“If the NID-related services are shifted from the Election Commission, it will be difficult to conduct elections,” he told reporters while inaugurating a medical camp at the Election Training Institute building at Agargaon in the capital.
The CEC said decision to hand over the NID-related services to the government has not been finalised yet. “It’s not something like chair and table that we can move it [from one place to another place]. We need to hold talks on this issue.”
He said that the NID services were created for the sake of voting only.
About the Cabinet Division letter sent to the EC Secretariat to shift the NID related services to the Home Ministry, the CEC also said that the commission was not officially informed about it.
He said that the whole issue of NID-related services needed to be discussed before it could be shifted. “Therefore, I hope that a proposal for formal talks will be made soon,” he added.
