Life-term means 30 years in jail
PBC News: A life-term convict will have to serve 30 years in jail according to the Bangladesh Penal Code (BPC) and Criminal Procedures (CrPc) unless it verdict mentions “until the convict’s natural death.”
The judgement was published on the Supreme Court’s website on Thursday (July 15).
It has been stated in the verdict that a convict in a life-term sentence will have to serve 30 years in jail unless the verdict mentions “until the convict’s natural death.”
Earlier in 2017, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court commuted the death sentences of the accused to life in jail in Savar’s businessman Zaman murder case. The Appellate Division also clarified that life-term doesn’t mean 30 years in jail, rather it means serving jail sentence until death.
Later, a review petition was filed when confusion was created among lawyers regarding the tenure of life-term jail sentence. Delivering the final verdict, the Appellate Division said on Thursday that life-term means 30 years’ jail sentence.
