Helena Jahangir gets bail
PBC News: Expelled Awami League leader Helena Jahangir has received bail in an extortion case.
The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Sufian Md Noman delivered the order after hearing on bail of Helena Jahangir on Tuesday (August 17).
However, she will not be released as there are several more cases pending against her.
A court placed Helena Jahangir on 14-day remand on August 3 last in four separate cases. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahinur Rahman placed her on a total of eight-day remand in a fraudulent case filed with Mirpur Police Station and an extortion case lodged with Pallabi Police Station.
On the other hand, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nivana Khair Jessy placed her on a six-day remand in two cases filed with Gulshan Police Station under the Digital Security Act and Narcotics Control Act.
Helena Jahangir was placed on a three-day remand on July 30 last in a case filed with Gulshan Police Station under the Digital Security Act.
Earlier, at night on July 29, RAB said that they seized ‘huge quantity’ of foreign liquor, equipment for casino gambling, walkie-talkie and knives from Helena Jahangir’s Gulshan flat. The RAB also raided Helena’s Joyjatra Foundation office and Joyjatra Internet Protocol television (IPTV) office at Mirpur on the same night.
Afterward, a press release was issued relieving Helena Jahangir from her member post in the Awami League women affairs sub-committee.
The press release said Helena Jahangir was a member of the Awami League women affairs sub-committee. But, she was relieved of her member post in the Awami League women affairs sub-committee as her recent activities uploaded in the social media were contrary to the party’s constitution.
Helena Jahangir came under limelight forming an organisation, dubbed “Awami Chakurijibi League.” Awami League termed such an organisation as “unauthorised and fake.”
Helena Jahangir took initiative to contest the Dhaka North City Corporation election in 2015 as a rival candidate of late Annisul Huq. At that time, she claimed that she did not belong to any particular political party, and wanted to contest the polls as an independent candidate. However, she withdrew herself from the race subsequently.
Helena Jahangir was associated with Gulshan Club, Gulshan North Club, Baridhara Club, Cumilla Club, Golf Club, Gulshan All Community Vlub, BGMEA Apparel Club, Boat Club, Gulshan Ladies’ Club, Gulshan Capital Club, Gulshan Society, Banani Society, Gulshan Joggers Society and Gulshan Helath Club.
