Barishal is calm, no need of BGB deployment: Divisional commissioner
PBC News: Barishal divisional commissioner Saiful Hasan Badal said the situation in the city is calm now and there is no need to deploy BGB at this moment. However, BGB is ready to patrol if needed, he added.
Ali Arshad, Deputy Commissioner (DC-South) of Barishal Metropolitan Police, said, “The law and order situation is under control for the safety of the people. Thirteen people have been arrested in separate cases. Attempts are being made to arrest the rest of the accused.”
Police have deployed at various points in the city to control the law and order situation, while RAB is also on patrol.
On the other hand, the leaders and activits of Sadar upazila unit Chhatra League staged demonstartion in front of Barisal University on Friday afternoon over the attack on the mayor. Besides, the upazila unit Awami League held protest rallies in Babuganj.
According to the case filed by UNO, an attack was carried out on UNO’s residence on Wednesday night while preventing the attackers from torn down banners and festoons in favor of State Minister for Water Resources Ministry Zahid Faruk on the occasion of the National Mourning Day.
Several Ansar members who were in charge of security at the residence were injured in the attack. The Chhatra League claimed that at least 30 of its leaders and activists were shot at that time.
Barishal City Corporation (BCC) mayor Serniabat Sadique Abdullah has been made prime accused in two cases filed in connection with the attack on Barishal Sadar UNO’s residence and clashes with police.
UNO Munibur Rahman is the plaintiff of a case, while police is of another.
Two separate cases were filed on Thursday (August 19) afternoon in connection with the attack on Barishal Sadar UNO’s residence and subsequent clashes with police.
Police have already arrested 13 persons in both the cases.
All the arrested persons are the leaders and activists of different associate organisations of Awami League, said Barishal Kotwali Model Police Station OC Nurul Islam.
