Hasina’s motorcade attack: Fugitive convict arrested
PBC News: The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested a fugitive a fugitive who was convicted of in a case filed over the attack on the then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina in 2002 in Satkhira.
The arrested accused is Arifur Rahman alias Ranju. He was arrested during a raid in Hazaribagh Police Station area in Dhaka on Friday.
Additional Commissioner of Police (DB) AKM Hafeez Akhter at a news conference at DMP Media Center on Saturday said, “The arrested Ranju was involved in Chhatra Dal politics in 1993 at Kalaroa Government College. He used to lead the orgainisation there.”
Referring to the attack, led by Ranju, on the convoy of the then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina while she was returning to Dhaka after holding a programme in Satkhira on August 30, 2002, he said, “After investigating the case, a charge sheet was filed in with the court against 50 people involved in the incident. On February 3, 2021, the court announced the verdict in this case.”
He said, “According to the verdict of the case, accused Ranju was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment and other accused were given different terms of imprisonment. Accused Ranju had been absconding since the incident.”
