বাঙালী জাতির পিতা কে? এ নিয়ে চলছে অনেক বিতর্ক- অধিকাংশ ভারতীয় বাঙালিরা মনে করেন ধীরেন্দ্রনাথ দত্ত হলেন বাঙালী জাতির পিতা আবার বাংলাদেশ আওয়ামীলীগ তথা মুজিব কন্যা শেখ হাসিনা মনে করেন শেখ মুজিব বাঙালী জাতির পিতা।

বিশিষ্ট মুক্তিযোদ্ধা মোহাম্মদ নুরুল ইসলাম (হাজি ইসলাম ) দাবি করেন আসল বাঙালী জাতির পিতা ধীরেন্দ্রনাথ দত্ত কেননা ভাষা আন্দোলনে পাকিস্তানের পার্লামেন্টে একমাত্র তিনি রাষ্ট্রভাষা বাংলা কায়েম করতে লড়ে ছিলেন। ভাষা আন্দোলনে শেখ মুজিবের কোন অবদান নাই।
