10,000 families marooned as Teesta flows above danger level
PBC News: Water level of Teesta River in Lalmonirhat district is flowing above danger level following onrush of water from upstream.
Over 10,000 families in char areas at three upazilas–Patgram, Hatibandha, and Kaliganj– became marooned after the water level started rising from 8:00pm on Tuesday.
The river was flowing above 60cm above danger level at Teesta Barrage point in Hatibandha upazila around 8:00am on Wednesday.
Forty-four sluice gates were kept open to control the water flow through the barrage, officials said.
Dalia Water Development Board (WDB) executive engineer Asif-ud-Doula said the Teesta has been flowing 60cm over the red mark since Tuesday night.
He said enough food have been stored to tackle the calamity.
Food assistance will be provided among the affected people soon after making a list through the UP chairmen, he added.
