Khaleda Zia undergoes biopsy test for cancer
It was disclosed by Khaleda Zia’s personal physician Dr AZM Zahid Hossain while addressing a press conference at the BNP Chairperson’s political office at Gulshan in the capital on Monday.
He said Khaleda Zia’s biopsy test was conducted on early Monday afternoon. Minimum 72 hours are required to receive the result of biopsy test. In some cases, it might require 15 to 21 days. “Khaleda Zia’s treatment depends on the result of her biopsy test,” he said
Khaleda Zia’s physician also said: “The BNP Chairperson has been doing well since samples for biopsy were taken from her body. She is out of danger now. She has talked to her son, brother Shamim Iskander and Arafat Rahman Koko’s wife Sharmila Rahman Sithi.”
He said biopsy is a part of the overall diagnostic process. The next course of treatment depends on its result.
Dr Zahid Hossain also mentioned that Khaleda Zia is now 76-year old. She has many old complications. Her medical board has opined that she requires treatment at a dedicated developed centre. “Khaleda Zia should be taken to abroad as early as possible for advanced treatment,” he said, quoting the medical board.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who was present at the press conference, said a prayer was submitted to the government from Khaleda Zia’s family. “Unfortunately, the government is not giving her permanent bail though she deserves it,” he said.
The government will have to bear all the consequences if Khaleda Zia faces any major physical problem, he asserted.
He said the government should rather make necessary arrangement so that Khaleda Zia can go abroad for treatment taking her existing physical condition into account.
What is biopsy?
Biopsy is most often done to look for cancer. It is the main way doctors diagnose most types of cancer. A biopsy is a sample of tissue taken from the body in order to examine it more closely. A doctor should recommend a biopsy when an initial test suggests an area of tissue in the body isn’t normal. Doctors may call an area of abnormal tissue a lesion, a tumor, a lump, or a mass.
After the tissue is collected, it is delivered to a pathologist. The pathologist examines the biopsy tissue under a microscope. By noting the tissue cells’ type, shape, and internal activity, in most cases a pathologist can diagnose the problem.
The time it takes to get results from a biopsy can vary.
