Fugitive militant Salehin’s death by hanging upheld by SC
PBC News: The Supreme Court has upheld the death penalty of Salauddin Salehin, a top militant from the banned JMB, who was convicted in the killing of Gani Gomez of Jamalpur in 2004.
A five-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order after hearing a petition on Tuesday morning.
The bench pronounced invalid the appeal of Rakib, another death-row convict in the case, as he already died.
Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Debnath represented the state.
Salehin was snatched away by his associates from a prison van at Trishal in Mymensingh when he was being taken to a court in another case in 2015. Since then, he has been absconding.
Additional Attorney General Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury said Gani Gomez, owner of a pharmacy, who had converted to Christianity from Islam, was killed by the JMB men in Jamalpur in2004. In 2006, both Salahuddin and Rakib were shown arrested in the case. In the same year, the Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 sentenced Salehin and Rakib to death in the Gani Gomez murder case and later the High Court (HC) upheld the sentences rejecting their appeals. They later appealed to the Hugh Court judgement.
On the other hand, militant Rakib, another accused in the case, was killed in a gunfight with police in 2015.
