ফেনীর এক সময়ের আলোচিত নেতা, সাবেক সাংসদ, আওয়ামী লীগের উপদেষ্টা পরিষদের সদস্য জয়নাল হাজারী মারা গেছেন, তার বয়স হয়েছিল ৭৬ বছর।

রাজধানীর একটি বেসরকারি হাসপাতালে চিকিৎসাধীন অবস্থায় সোমবার বিকাল সোয়া ৫টার দিকে তার মৃত্যু হয় বলে আওয়ামী লীগের উপ দপ্তর সম্পাদক সায়েম খান জানান।
বিডিনিউজ টোয়েন্টিফোর ডটকমকে তিনি বলেন, জয়নাল হাজারীর মৃত্যুতে প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা এবং আওয়ামী লীগ সাধারণ সম্পাদক ওবায়দুল কাদের গভীর শোক ও দুঃখ প্রকাশ করেছেন।
ফেনী-২ আসনের সাংসদ ও জেলা আওয়ামী লীগের সাধারণ সম্পাদক নিজাম উদ্দিন হাজারী বলেছেন, মঙ্গলবার দুপুরে ফেনী সরকারি পাইলট হাই স্কুল মাঠে জয়নাল হাজারীর নামাজে জানাজা অনুষ্ঠানের ব্যবস্থা করা হচ্ছে।
শোক জানিয়ে নিজাম বলেন, “আমি মর্মাহত। তিনি দলের প্রবীণ নেতা। তিনি আমার পরিবারের স্বজন।

ফেনীর এক সময়ের দণ্ডমুণ্ডের কর্তা হিসেবে বিবেচিত জয়নাল হাজারী শেষ জীবনে রাজনীতিতে ক্ষমতাহীন হয়ে পড়েছিলেন। তবে কয়েক বছর আগে আওয়ামী লীগের উপদেষ্টা পরিষদে স্থান দেওয়া হয়েছিল তাকে।
গত এক যুগে ফেনী ছেড়ে ঢাকায় থেকে হাজারিকা প্রতিদিন নামে একটি সংবাদপত্র প্রকাশ করে চলছিলেন তিনি।

১৯৪৫ সালে জন্ম নেওয়া জয়নাল হাজারী আজীবন আওয়ামী লীগেই যুক্ত ছিলেন। ১৯৮৪ থেকে ২০০৪ সাল পর্যন্ত দুই দশক ফেনী জেলা আওয়ামী লীগের সাধারণ সম্পাদক ছিলেন তিনি।
ফেনী-২ (ফেনী সদর) আসন থেকে ১৯৮৬, ১৯৯১ এবং ১৯৯৬ সালে তিন বার সংসদ সদস্য নির্বাচিত হন তিনি।

ওই সময়ে ফেনীতে জয়নাল হাজারী ‘ত্রাসের রাজত্ব’ কায়েম করেছিলেন বলে ব্যাপক সমালোচনা রয়েছে।
রাজনৈতিক প্রতিপক্ষ এমনকি দলের মধ্যে নিজের বিরোধীদের উপরও খড়গহস্ত ছিলেন হাজারী। তার নির্যাতন থেকে সাংবাদিকরাও রেহাই পাননি।
বিএনপি বরাবরই জয়নাল হাজারীকে ‘সন্ত্রাসীদের গডফাদার’ বলত। তার জবাবে আওয়ামী লীগ সাধারণ সম্পাদক ওবায়দুল কাদের বলেছিলেন, ‘রাজনৈতিক উদ্দেশ্যেই’ হাজারীকে এভাবে চরিত্রায়ন করা হয়।
১৯৯৬-২০০১ মেয়াদে হাজারীর কর্মকাণ্ডের কারণে তখনকার আওয়ামী লীগ সরকারকেও সমালোচনার মুখে পড়তে হয়েছিল।

২০০১ সালে তত্ত্বাবধায়ক সরকার দায়িত্ব নেওয়ার পর ১৬ অগাস্ট রাতে যৌথবাহিনীর (বিডিআর-পুলিশ) তল্লাশির সময় পালিয়ে ভারতে চলে যান হাজারী।
দীর্ঘ আট বছর দেশের বাইরে থাকার পর ২০০৯ সালে আওয়ামী লীগ আবার ক্ষমতায় ফিরলে দেশে ফেরেন তিনি।

অর্থ পাচারের একটি মামলায় জামিন চাইতে গেলে ওই বছর ১৫ এপ্রিল আদালত তাকে কারাগারে পাঠায়। পরে তিনি জামিনে মুক্তি পান।
পলাতক অবস্থায় হাজারীর বিরুদ্ধে মোট ২৭টি মামলা হয়, যার মধ্যে পাঁচটিতে সাজার রায় হলেও উচ্চ আদালত তাকে সবগুলোতেই খালাস দেয়।
বহু ঘটনায় বিতর্কিত এই রাজনীতিবিদ দশম জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচনে ফেনীর তিনটি আসনে স্বতন্ত্র প্রার্থী হিসেবে মনোনয়নপত্র দাখিল করলেও সেগুলো বাতিল হয়ে যায়।
তখন তাকে বহিষ্কার করেছিল আওয়ামী লীগ। পরে অবশ্য দলে ফিরিয়ে নিয়ে ২০১৯ সালে তাকে কেন্দ্রীয় উপদেষ্টা পরিষদে স্থান দেওয়া হয়।
