Three arrested for robbery at Karnaphuli Garden City

PBC News:  Three persons have been arrested with 221 bhori of gold jewelries by the Detective Branch of police  in connection with a daring stealing at two gold shops at Karnaphuli Garden City in the capital.

The arrested are Shahid Matbar alias Shahin, Shoishab Roy alias Sumon, and Uttam Kumar Sur.

It was stated by AKM Hafiz Akhter, Additional Commissioner of the DB, while addressing a press conference at the DMP Media Centre in the capital on Tuesday afternoon.

Under primary questioning, the arrested said some jewelries fell down when they were fleeing after stealing. At that time, they threw away some diamond jewelries thinking those as imitation. They also kept some jewelries at Uttam Kumar’s shop, while the rest was sold. The detectives are trying to recover those.

The DB’s Additional Commissioner said being instigated by Uttam Kumar, Shahin and Sumon came from village and got involved in stealing. They planned to commit stealing for 15 days staying at Kalpana Boarding House at Tanti Bazar. As the security system at Karnaphuli Garden City was somewhat relaxed, they chose it as their target.

Hafiz Akhter said Shahin was arrested from Nagarkanda Police Station area in Faridpur district on December 26 last, while two others were arrested on the basis of his information from Barishal district and Shankhari Bazar under Kotwali Police Station in the capital on Monday.

The DB’s Additional Commissioner said: “Shahin is the main thief. He and Sumon used to commit robbery in Faridpur and Barishal districts. Suddenly, they wished to commit robbery in Dhaka city. Then they came to Dhaka through Uttam. Visiting different markets for 15 days, they then targetted Karnaphuli Garden City. They failed to commit robbery in their attempt four days before the incident. Later, they entered Karnaphuli Garden City through an adjacent under-construction building and left with gold jewelries committing robbery.

Hafiz Akhter said 22 bhories of jewelries found on the road were deposited to Ramna Police Station. If anybody took away gold or diamond jewelries from the road, they are requested to deposit those to the police station concerned or DB office. If anyone doesn’t deposit the jewelries voluntarily, legal action would be taken for keeping stolen goods after investigation.

It may be mentioned that some 700 bhories of gold jewelries were stolen from two shops–Mohona Jewellers, and Best and Best Creation Jewel Avenue Jewelers housed at Karnaphuli Garden City early in the morning on December 18 last. A case was filed with Ramna Model Police Station in connection with the incident. Later, the Ramna Zonal Team of the Detective Branch of Ramna Division launched an investigation into the incident.
