SUST students on indefinite movement demanding VC’s resignation
PBC News: Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) students started indefinite movement from Monday morning to press home their three-point demands, including resignation of Vice-Chancellor (VC) Farid Uddin.
The protesting students threatened to declare the VC persona non-grata on the campus and said they will not leave the residential halls if their demands are not met.
Students from five residential halls gathered inside the university around 8am protesting the authorities decision to shut the university for an indefinite period and demanding the VC’s resignation.
Additional police were deployed in the campus to avert untoward situation.
The demonstrators said they will strict on their sit-on programme in the campus till the VC’s resignation.
After an emergency syndicate meeting on Sunday night, the university students were ordered to vacate all halls by 12noon on Monday.
Protesting halting the classes and examinations and administration’s order to leave halls, the students also staged demonstration at early hours. They also hold a small rally at Muktamancha where they announced that they will not leave the campus till their demands are met.
Around 200 students of the university took position in front of main gate of the SUST around 7pm to protest police attack on the protesters.
The students on Sunday confined vice-chancellor Farid Uddin at the IICT building. Police charged batons on them and shot rubber bullets and sound grenades to free the VC.
At least 30 people, including policemen, students, teachers, were injured in the attack.
Former students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Dhaka are scheduled to hold protest movement in front of Raju Sculpture of Dhaka University at 6pm today.
