Abrar murder: Death-row convict files plea seeking acquittal
PBC News: SM Mahmud Setu, a death-row convict in BUET student Abrar Fahad murder case, filed a petition with the High Court seeking acquittal on Wednesday.
Advocate Jamiul Huque Faisal and Barrister Sharmin Akter Sheuli filed the petition with the HC bench concerned on behalf of Setu.
On December 8 last year, a Dhaka court sentenced 20 young men, mostly leaders and workers of BUET Chhatra League, to death and five others to life imprisonment for killing Abrar, a 21-year-old student of BUET, on October 6, 2019.
On the following day, Abrar Fahad’s father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case with Chalk Bazar Police Station accusing 19 persons.
Later, police arrested 21 accused. Afterward, Detective Branch of police submitted chargesheet to court accusing 25 persons on November 13 of the same year. Subsequently, judge Abu Zafar Md Kamruzzaman of Speedy Trial Tribunal-1, Dhaka delivered verdict in the sensational murder case on December 8 last year.
Twenty of the accused were given death sentences, while five other sentenced for life-time.
On January 6, the death references of Abrar Fahad murder case were sent to the High Court for examining by the lower court.
Now, death-row convict SM Mahmud Setu made a seperate appeal against the verdict on Wednesday (January 19).
According to the prosecution, Abrar, a second-year student of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Buet, was beaten to death by Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders at Sher-e-Bangla Hall in 2019.
He was found dead on the staircase of the hall in the early hours of October 7, after he was taken to Room No. 2011 around 8:00pm on October 6 and beaten mercilessly.
Those sentenced to death are Mehedi Hassan Rusell, Muntasir Al Jemi, Tabakkharul Islam Tanvir, Mohammad Sadat, Mizanur Rahman, Shamsul Arefin Rafat, Md Shamim Billah, Majedur Rahman, Hossain Mohammad Toha, Moniruzzaman Monir, Mehedi Hasan Robin, Muzahidur Rahman Muzahid, Anik Sarker, Meftahul Islam Zion, Ifti Mosharraf Shakal, SM Mahmud Setu, Morshed Amartya Islam, Morshedzamman alias Jisan, Ehteshamul Rabbi Tanim and Mujtaba Rafid.
