20 students hospitalised as hunger strike enters fifth day
PBC News: Students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) have been on hunger strike for five days demanding the resignation of its vice-chancellor Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed. The agitating students have announced that they will continue their hunger strike as no decision has been taken over resignation of the vice-chancellor.
Meanwhile, 20 students are undergoing treatment at the hospital as their condition has deteriorated till Monday morning. Besides, eight students are continuing hunger strike. A total of 23 students have been on a continuous hunger strike since 3.00 pm on Wednesday, out of which five more students have joined as part of the mass hunger strike.
Besides, one of the agitating students said that seven students are undergoing treatment at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital will return to the hunger strike site on Monday afternoon and will continue their hunger strike from there.
Meanwhile, the unrest on the campus deepened on Sunday evening as its protesting students disconnected electricity supply to the Vice-Chancellor’s residence as he refused to step down as per their demand.
At 9:30 pm, a torch procession with the participation of more than 1,000 students brought out from ‘Mukto Mancha’ and paraded around different roads on the campus.
SUST was to close following a clash on the campus between police and the protesting students on January 16. Its students were asked to leave the dormitories by 12 pm on Monday.
