Wearing burqa, hijab constitutional rights of women: HC
PBC News: The High Court has remarked that wearing burqa or hijab is a constitutional right of women.
At the same time, the High Court directed to investigate the incidents of harassment faced by female students for wearing burqas in educational institutions of 15 districts of the country.
The High Court bench comprising Justice Mujibur Rahman Mia and Justice Khizir Hayat passed the order on Thursday after a preliminary hearing on a writ petition.
The court also asked to submit reports within the next 60 days regarding the wearing of burqas at the educational institutions.
Education secretary, religious affairs secretary, secondary and higher secondary education boards’ chairmen have been asked to submit the reports.
It has been mentioned in the writ petition that incidents have happened at some educational institutions recently barring the students to wear hijab which was direct interference on individual freedom. Criticism started at different forums including the social media following the incidents.
Lawyer Ilias Ali Mondal appeared for the writ petition.
