PBC News: The government is conspiring to create anarchy in the country by resorting to attack on opposition leaders and activists in the country, said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday (August 29).
“Being scared of the movement of BNP, the government has adopted the tactics of repression and torture on BNP leaders and activists in the country,” he said while addressing a press conference at BNP centra office at Nayapaltan in the capital early Monday afternoon.
Narrating the incidents of attacks of the government during the ongoing agitation programmes at upazila level across the country, he alleged that more than 750 BNP leaders and workers were injured in the attacks. Several thousands of leaders and workers were implicated in false and fabricated criminal cases. A total of 60 activists have been arrested.
“The ruling Awami League has been attacking the BNP demonstrations, assualting the opposition leaders and workers, and vandalising their business establishments,” he said. “Now, they have added a new dimension to their attacks which is vandalising the houses of BNP leaders and workers.”
Mirza Fakhrul said the prime minister had recently said that none would be arrested, and meetings, rallies and processions would be allowed in the country again.
“Now, we see that they (Awami League) is doing the opposite things. This is the character of Awami League. Their terroristic characteristics have again exposed to people of the country. They have destroyed the country in such a manner and turned Bangladesh into a failed state,” he said.
Announcing the fresh programmes, Fakhrul said the BNP’s programmes would continue till September 10 at upazila, thana, municipality and union levels. The demonstrations would also be held at those upazilas and thanas where the programmes have not taken place yet.
