Onion sells at Tk 18 a kg in Hili Port
Sirajul Islam, a trader who came to buy onions at the port, said the price of onion increased to Tk 25-26 last week suddenly. But he got onion at lower prices on Thursday. However, the quality of onion was not so good.
Ismail Hossain, an onion trader at the port, said imports through the port were continuing to meet the demand of onions in the country’s market. However, the quality of onion was coming out a little worse because it has been inside the truck for two to three days in the heat of the last few days.
Meanwhile, within a few days, new varieties of onions from the south area will start emerging in India. Before this, the old onion must be finished. Because of this, they were releasing the old onion of Indore variety in the market, he added.
Hili Land Port public relations officer Sohrab Hossain said the import of onion from India through Hili Land Port was continuing. Some 25 to 30 trucks of onions are coming through the port every day on an average.
He also said 929 tons of onions were imported by 31 trucks through the port on Wednesday.
