Gangrape of teen at gunpoint, fugitive convict held after 18 years
PBC News: A fugitive death-row convict has been arrested from the city Badda after long 18 years in a sensational incident of gang-rape of a 13-year old girl at Sonagazi in Feni district back in 2003.
The convict Oli Nabi alias Latu Mia was arrested by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-3 from Merul Badda area in the capital on Monday.
The RAB-3 said arrested Latu Mia is one of the death-row convicts who had raped the girl at gunpoint tying her mother.
Lt Col Arif Mohiuddin Ahmed, commander of RAB-3, said at a press conference at RAB Media Centre at Kawran Bazar in the capital on Tuesday that four death-row convicts–Latu Mia, Faruk, Jahangir Alam and Kashem – dragging a widowed woman and her 13-year-old daughter out from their house breaking the doors at Nababpur union under Sonagazi upazila after midnight on May 13, 2003. Then the convicts gangraped the girl right before her mother making her hostage at gunpoint.
Being the plaintiff, the victim’s mother filed a case against the accused Latu Mia, Faruk, Jahangir Alam and Kashem with Sonagazi Police Station on the following day. The investigation officer submitted the chargesheet to the court on August 13, 2003.
After judicial proceedings in the case was over, the court handed down death sentences to three of the four accused. At the same time, the court fined each of the convicts Tk 2 lakh, while accused Faruk was acquitted as crime against him was not proved.
The RAB-3 commander further said the convict Latu Mia took the job of a guard to escape the eyes of law enforcers. When he was fugitive, he used to introduce himself as Oli Nabi. After the order of death sentence, he went into hiding at a mazar in Dhaka.
