8 Rohingya men get life term for smuggling 2 lakh Yaba tablets
PBC NEWS DESK: A Cox’s Bazar court on Monday sentenced eight Rohingya men to life term imprisonment for smuggling Yaba tablets into the country in 2019.
Cox’s Bazar Additional District and Sessions Judge Nishat Sultana passed verdict and also fined them Tk 1,00,000 each, in default, they have to serve another year in jail.
The convicts–Md Doula, Robi Alam, Md Alam, Md Shafiqul, Md Noor, Noor-A-Alam, Ali Ahmed, and Nurul Amin – were present at the courtroom when the verdict was announced, Public Prosecutor advocate Farid Alam said.
All of them hailed from Rakhine state of Myanmar, he added.
According to prosecution, on September 19, 2019, a team of coast guard stopped a fishing trawler adjacent to Chhera Dwip of St Martin’s Island in Teknaf upazila for its suspicious movement.
The coast guard members managed to catch eight people and seized two lakh Yaba tablets from their possessions.A coast guard member filed a case with Teknaf Police Station against the eight on the same day.
