Verdict of expelled AL leader Helena Jahangir, 4 others on March 20
PBC NEWS DESK: A court in Dhaka on Tuesday set March 20 to deliver its judgment against expelled Awami League leader and Joyjatra Television chairman Helena Jahangir and four others in an extortion case filed with Pallabi Police Station in the capital.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Tofazzal Hossain fixed the date after closing arguments from both sides–prosecution and defence.Helena Jahangir and four other accused were present at the dock.
Both prosecution and defence presented their arguments in presence of them. Following the close of remarks, the defence pleaded for unconditional release of the accused, while the prosecution expected maximum punishment in the case.
On 29 July, 2021, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained Helena Jahangir from her Gulshan house and seized foreign liquors, illegal walkie-talkie sets, sharp weapons, foreign currencies, casino equipment and a deer hide.
On August 2, 2021, Joyjatra Television’s Bhola district correspondent Abdur Rahman Tuhin filed the case being the plaintiff.
After investigation, Criminal Investigation Department (CID)’s inspector and investigation officer of the case Shahinur Islam submitted chargesheet to a court against Helena Jahangir and four others on November 21, 2021.
On April 18 last year, the court ordered trial of the case after framing charges against Helena and four others.The court recorded statements of 13 prosecution witnesses, including complainant in the case.
