কনসুলেট কর্মকর্তা পুলিশ ডেকে প্রবাসীদের হেনস্থা করায় ক্ষিপ্ত হলেন বাফেলো শহরের বাংলাদেশী কমিউনিটি

মতিউর রহমান লিটু: নিউইয়র্ক থেকে বাফেলো শহরে ভ্রাম্যমান কনসুলেট সেবা দিতে এসে সামান্য ভিড় দেখে অতিষ্ঠ হয়ে প্রবাসীদের হেনস্থা করতে পুলিশ ডেকে ক্ষমতার বড়াই দেখাতে চেয়েছিলেন কনসুলেট অফিসের কয়েকজন কর্মকর্তা। উপস্থিত প্রবাসী বাংলাদেশিদের প্রতিবাদের মুখে বাফেলো পুলিশ অস্থায়ী কনসুলেট অফিস থেকে চলে গেলে তোপের মুখে পরেন কনসুলেট অফিসের কর্মকর্তারা। সকলে জানতে চান কেন এবং কি কারণে সাধারণ প্রবাসীদের হেনস্থা করতে পুলিশ ডাকা হয়েছিল? বিনা উস্কানি ও বিনা কোন অঘটনের আগেই কনসুলেট অফিসে পুলিশ ডেকে প্রবাসীদের হেনস্থা করার চেষ্টা করায় ক্ষোভে ফেটে পড়েছেন বাফেলো শহরের বাংলাদেশী বাসিন্দারা। বিষয়টি অত্যন্ত হাস্যকর ও অগ্রহণযোগ্য বলে কমিউনিটির নেতৃবৃন্দ ইতোমধ্যে তীব্র প্রতিক্রিয়া ব্যক্ত করেছেন।

আজ শনিবার ১০ই জুন ২০২৩, সকাল ৯টা থেকে ৯৯৫ ফিলমোর এভিনিউতে বাংলাদেশিদের বিরাট লাইন লেগে যায় কনসুলেট সেবা নেয়ার জন্য, বৃদ্ধ, নারী এমনকি “ডিসেবল’ লোকের উপস্থিতি ছিল চোখে পড়ার মতো। লম্বা সময় লাইনে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা প্রবাসীদের খুব একটা গুরুত্ব দেয়া হচ্ছেনা বলে অভিযোগ আসতে থাকে, এরমধ্যে অফিসাররা “লাঞ্চ ব্রেকে” চলে যান এবং ৩টা ৪০ মিনিটে আবার অফিস খোলা হবে জানিয়ে সবাইকে টোকেন ধরিয়ে দেন কিন্তু সন্ধ্যা ৫টার পরেও অফিস খোলা হচ্ছেনা কেন এমন প্রশ্নের কোন জবাব না দিয়ে উপস্থিত প্রবাসীদের ভয় দেখানোর জন্য কতৃপক্ষ পুলিশ কল করেন আর এতেই তৈরী হয় অপ্রীতিকর পরিস্থিতি। সবার ক্ষোভ ও প্রশ্ন ছিল কেন পুলিশ কল করা হলো? কেন উপস্থিত প্রবাসীদের অযথা অপমান করা হলো?

উল্লেখ্য: অতি স্বল্প সময়ে গড়ে ওঠা বাংলাদেশী কমিউনিটির অন্যতম শহর বাফেলো। পশ্চিম নিউইয়র্ক নামে পরিচিত ইরি কাউন্টির বাফেলো শহর, নায়াগ্রা ফলস, টানাওয়ান্ডা, চিকতাওয়াগা সহ উইলিয়ামসভিল এলাকায় এখন প্রায় লক্ষাধিক বাংলাদেশিদের বসবাস। এখানে স্থায়ী বাংলাদেশী কনসুলেট অফিস এখনো হয়ে ওঠেনি তাই প্রতি বছর বাংলাদেশ সোসাইটি অফ বাফেলো কতৃক ভ্রাম্যমান কনসুলেট সেবা দিতে নিউইয়র্ক থেকে আমন্ত্রণ জানানো হয় কনসুলেট কর্মকর্তাদের। এবারেও ছিল সেই একই আয়োজন। অন্যান্য বছরের তুলনায় চলতি বছর অনেক বেশি প্রবাসী বাংলাদেশিরা কনসুলেটের সেবা নিতে আসেন। পাসপোর্ট নবায়ন, পাওয়ার অফ এটর্নি, নো-ভিসা রিকোয়ার্ড ইত্যাদি সেবা নিতে মূলত প্রবাসী বাংলাদেশিরা কনসুলেটের দ্বারস্থ হন।
