Major Zia: The man behind modern republic of Bangladesh I multi party democracy I PBC24TV
Major Ziaur Rahman, born on January 19, 1936, in Bogura, Bengal Presidency, emerged as a pivotal figure in the history of Bangladesh. His military career began with his commissioning as a second lieutenant in the Pakistan Army in 1955, marked by his valor during the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War, where he earned the Hilal-i-Jurat. The defining moment of his legacy came on March 26, 1971, when he proclaimed the independence of Bangladesh from Chittagong, igniting the Liberation War and galvanizing the Bengali resistance movement. His leadership and strategic brilliance were instrumental during this period, earning him a place in history comparable to George Washington. Post-independence, Zia played a crucial role in stabilizing the nation following Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s assassination in 1975. As President, he introduced multi-party democracy, founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), and implemented policies fostering economic growth, rural development, and international relations, including the establishment of SAARC. His assassination on May 30, 1981, was a significant loss, but his contributions continue to shape Bangladesh’s political and economic landscape.
