Seminar and Protest in New York: Bangladeshi Expatriates Condemn Indian Propaganda
In January 2025, young Bangladeshi expatriates in New York City organized a series of seminars and protests to demand an end to disinformation campaigns allegedly spread by the Indian government and media against Bangladesh. They raised concerns about false narratives aimed at destabilizing Bangladesh following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government.
Protests and Memoranda Submission
The group held protests in front of the Indian Consulate General’s office in New York and submitted memoranda to high-ranking officials, including the Consul General of Bangladesh and the Consul General of India. Their main contention was that Indian media, YouTubers, and newspapers had been disseminating false reports about Bangladesh, including fabricated allegations of religious persecution.
Political Context
After Sheikh Hasina’s government was overthrown during a mass uprising in August 2024, India reportedly lost a key ally in Bangladesh. Critics allege that Hasina’s administration prioritized Indian interests over Bangladesh’s sovereignty. Indian leaders and media have since made derogatory remarks about Bangladesh, accusing it of persecuting religious minorities, despite India’s own record of such violations.
Religious Harmony in Bangladesh
Abdul Kader, Chief Coordinator of the human rights group Patriots of Bangladesh, spoke at a discussion in New York titled “Save Bangladesh from Indian Propaganda” on January 3. He emphasized Bangladesh’s longstanding tradition of religious harmony, countering claims of persecution. Kader accused Indian politicians and media of attempting to disrupt this harmony by spreading religious hatred and false narratives.
Government’s Commitment to Religious Minorities
Nazmul Huda, the Consul General of Bangladesh in New York, attended the event as a guest speaker. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting religious minorities. “The Chief Advisor, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has called for unity, emphasizing that all citizens, regardless of faith or ethnicity, are Bangladeshi and must work together for national development,” he said.
Journalistic Perspectives
Prominent journalist Moinuddin Naser highlighted India’s alleged efforts to demoralize Bangladesh’s youth and divide the nation for its own interests. He urged Bangladeshi citizens to remain vigilant and expose disinformation campaigns. Naser also called on the media to play a proactive role in countering false narratives, emphasizing India’s issues with religious violence and persecution within its borders.
Historical Context and Unity
Jewel Zakir, a member of the Patriots of Bangladesh, reminded attendees of Bangladesh’s struggle for independence in 1971 and condemned India’s alleged interference in its internal affairs. He accused India’s ruling party of attempting to undermine Bangladesh’s unity and religious harmony by spreading fabricated news.
Human Rights Concerns in India
Abdus Sabur shed light on the plight of Muslims in India, accusing the Indian government of turning a blind eye to religious violence. He mentioned incidents like the demolition of Muslim homes in Uttar Pradesh and other acts of persecution, contrasting these issues with the allegations made against Bangladesh.
Call for Awareness and Solidarity
The event concluded with calls for unity among Bangladeshis to counter Indian propaganda and protect the country’s reputation. Speakers, including Queen Mother, Dr. Abid Bahar, and Abdur Rahman, emphasized the importance of solidarity and vigilance against external attempts to destabilize the nation.
The seminar and protests highlighted concerns over external interference in Bangladesh’s internal affairs, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to peace, unity, and religious harmony. Participants urged Bangladeshis worldwide to remain aware of disinformation and work collectively to safeguard the country’s sovereignty and reputation.
