জুলাই মাসের গণ অভ্যুত্থান এবং বৈষম্যবিরোধী ছাত্র আন্দোলনের পর গঠিত জাতীয় নাগরিক কমিটি একটি নতুন রাজনৈতিক দল গঠনের সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছে। তবে, বিএনপি এই উদ্যোগের প্রতি আপত্তি জানিয়ে বলেছে, অন্তর্বর্তী সরকারে থাকাকালীন ক্ষমতায় থেকে দল গঠন করা অবৈধ। বিএনপির নেতারা দাবি করেছেন যে, এটি রাষ্ট্রীয় গোয়েন্দা সংস্থার মাধ্যমে নিয়ন্ত্রিত হতে পারে। অন্যদিকে, বৈষম্যবিরোধী ছাত্র আন্দোলনের নেতা হাসনাত আবদুল্লাহ জানিয়েছেন, ফ্যাসিবাদী সরকারের পতনের পর নতুন রাজনৈতিক কাঠামো গঠন ও গণতন্ত্র প্রতিষ্ঠার লক্ষ্যেই নতুন দল গঠনের উদ্যোগ নেওয়া হয়েছে।
