Mamata heading for massive victory, but loses her own seat
PBC News: Mamata Banerjee has led the incumbent Trinamool Congress (TMC) to a massive win with the party winning as many as 126 seats so far and leading in 92 other seats, but the party supremo has lost her own seat in Nandigram to Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Suvendu Adhikari.
In a surprise turn, Mamata lost to Suvendu Adhikari after the Election Commission (EC) sudenly retracted its earlier announcement of her win.
Earlier, the EC result showed that Mamata Banerjee defeated her BJP rival Suvedu Adhikari in Nandigram by over 1,200 votes.
“Don’t worry about Nandigram, I struggled for Nandigram because I fought a movement. It’s ok. Let the Nandigram people give whatever verdict they want, I accept that. I don’t mind. We won more than 221 seats & BJP has lost the election,” said Mamata Banerjee.
The saffron party has so far won 32 seats and leads in 40 seats in what has turned out to be a bipolar contest and massively improving its 2016 tally of 3 seats.
Adhikari, formerly a party colleague of Mamata, changed sides and joined the BJP recently.
The BJP, which had just three seats in the 294-member Assembly in the 2016 Assembly polls and went to win 18 out of 42 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, had pulled out all stops in the state in a determined bid to oust Banerjee, a vocal critic of Prime Minister Modi, and add another state to its tally of 17.
