Decision on Jahangir’s mayorship to be known by 1-2 days: Minister
The journalists asked him whether Mohammad Jahangir Alam will remain Gazipur city mayor or not as he was permanently expelled from Awami League with which ticket he won the polls.
In reply, the minister said it can be said after scrutinizing the act and that would require one to two days.
Disclosing that the revised Local Government (zila parishad) Act has been approved in the cabinet meeting, Tajul said a upazila parishad chairman as well as a municipality mayor will be a member of zila parishad according to the revised act.
A UNO and a delegate from the local government will be present in the zila parishad meeting, he added.
On Friday, the Awami League expelled its Gazipur city unit general secretary Jahangir Alam for life for his controversial remarks about Bangabandhu and the number of freedom-fighters killed during the liberation war.
The 42-year-old Jahangir Alam, who was also served a show-cause notice earlier by the party, was expelled for his remarks about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the number of freedom fighters killed during the War of Liberation in 1971, at a programme back in September last.
Later, the video of his remarks went viral on Facebook on September 22. The video was four minutes in length where Jahangir was heard saying, “Our Bangabandhu had arranged the killing of 30 lakh (freedom fighters). Some 45,000 died in each of 64 districts. He had realised his own interest through it.”
