Gang rape of mother, daughter: Three get life-term jail

PBC News:  A court in Gaibandha district has awarded three accused life-term jail sentence and fined Tk 1 lakh each of them for gang rape of a woman and her daughter inviting them over phone  from Dhaka.

Judge Md Abdur Rahman of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2, Gaibandha pronounced the verdict on Tuesday (November 30) in presence of all five accused on the dock.

Three convicts are Belal Hossain, son of Mamtaz Uddin of village Gosaipur, Emdadul Huq, son of Badiuzzaman Mia of the same village, and Khaja Mia, son of Dudu Mia of village Shyampur Parbatipur under Gobindaganj upazila.

Two accused were acquitted from the case. They are Azizul Islam, son of Abdul Kader of village Satgachi Hatiadaha, and Asadul Islam, son of Shahidul Islam, of village Sundail under Gobindaganj upazila.

The case statement reveals that the convicts, introducing themselves as ‘Jiner Badhsa,’ called in a woman and her daughter to Gobindganj upazila over phone from Mirpur in Dhaka on May 12, 2018. The woman and her daughter–hailed from Sarishabari upazila in Jamalpur district–were called in Gobindaganj alluring them in finding some ‘hidden treasure’.

Being allured, both mother and daughter reached Gobindaganj from Dhaka at night on May 12, 2018. When they reached Gobindaganj bus stand, one of the gang members, picked them up from the bus stand and took them to Amnathpur Balua, a remote area near the River Katakhali at night. The gang members raped the mother and the daughter throughout the entire night and fled the spot.

On the following day, the victims filed a rape case with the Gobindaganj Police Station.

Gobindaganj police later arrested one Sada Mia and other rapists. Police arrested a total of five persons. After long recording the depositions of witnesses, the judge on Tuesday delivered the verdict.
