Most members of search committee AL backed: Fakhrul
PBC News: Mentioning that BNP will not give names to search committee for constituting the new Election Commission, the party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said most of the people in the search committee are Awami League-backed.
“This search committee is worthless to us. From past experiences we have seen that there is no benefit in it (in the committee). There is no point to give the proposal of names to search committee for forming Election Commission.
We don’t give importance to it,” Fakhrul told reporters after visiting BNP leader Abdul Aziz at a hospital in Dhaka on Monday morning.
The BNP secretary general said, “If Awami League government is in power and the next election is held under this election commission, then this election will not be acceptable. The participation of the people in that election will not be ensured.”
He said, “We see discussions are being held with eminent persons, search committees are being formed, but most of the people in the search committee are Awami League-backed. There is also one who took MP nomination from that party.”
The first meeting of the newly formed search committee to form the Election Commission was held at the Judges Lounge of Supreme Court Appellate Division on Sunday.
In the meeting, newly formed search committee has decided to seek names from registered political parties by February 10.
