Awami League distorts Ekushey spirit: Fakhrul
PBC News: BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that Awami League has distorted the spirit of Ekushey. He said this after paying homage to the language martyrs with BNP leaders and activists at the central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka on Monday morning on the occasion of Amar Ekushey and the International Mother Language Day
The BNP secretary general said it is unfortunate that a government is ruling the people who have distorted the spirit of Ekushey.
“They (government) have taken away the right to vote and freedom of speech. Arrangements are being made to cripple the economy of this country.”
Mirza Fakhrul said, “Seventy years ago today, Jabbar, Barkat and many others sacrificed their lives on the streets to make Bengali the state language. At that time Pakistan was forced to make Bengali as the state language. But Bengali language is not yet established at all levels.”
Mirza Fakhrul said, “The spirit of this language movement in 70 years ago was the spirit of our rights and democratic state system. This spirit was for making a free society. We joined the Liberation war in 1971 upholding that spirit.”
He said, “Our Mother of democracy Khaleda Zia is under house arrest today even though she is sick. Our leader Tarique Rahman is in exile in a false case and living abroad. Countless people are facing charges today. The country is being run through such a terrible situation.”
Fakhrul said they will create a mass uprising with the spirit of language movement in order to get rid of this situation.
