Shahabuddin Chuppu set to become next President of Bangladesh
PBC NEWS DESK: Awami League Advisory Council member Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu is set to become the country’s next president as the ruling party on Sunday nominated him as the party’s presidential candidate.As he is the sole candidate, voting will not require for the presidential post.
Election Commission (EC) Secretary Jahangir Alam said on Sunday afternoon that nomination paper for no other candidate, except Awami League nominated Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu, was submitted till 4:00pm on Sunday — the last date for submission of nomination papers.
The EC will make its decision after scrutinising nomination papers by early Monday afternoon.
Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina finalised the name of retired district and sessions judge Shahabuddin Chuppu as the Awami League candidate for the post of president.
On Sunday, an Awami League team, led by the party’s general secretary Obaidul Quader, submitted nomination paper for Shahabuddin Chuppu as the party nominated candidate to the EC.
Later, he briefed reporters in front of the Nirbachan Commission Bhaban at Agargaon in the capital in this regard.
Obaidul Quader said Awami League has nominated Shahabuddin Chuppu as the 22nd President of Bangladesh.
At the meeting of the Awami League Parliamentary Party (ALPP) held on February 7 last, Awami League president Sheikh Hasina was given responsibility unanimously to finalise the name of the party’s candidate for president post. She has finalised the nomination.
In a reaction on early Sunday afternoon, Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for giving him nomination to the post of president.
“I express my gratitude to Almighty Allah. I also express my gratitude to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as she has nominated me to the post of president. This is just my reaction at this moment,” Shahabuddin told reporters.
Shahabuddin Chuppu was a former journalists at the Daily Banglar Bani (now defunct), a retired district and sessions judge, served as a commissioner at the Anti-Corruption Commission.
