Five police men among 13 people jailed in Yaba smuggling case
PBC NEWS DESK: A Feni court on Monday sentenced 13 people, including five police men, to different jail terms in a case filed over smuggling 6.80 lakh Yaba tablets in Lalpur area of Feni Sadar upazila in 2015.
Judge Syed Md Kaiser Musharraf Yusuf of Additional District and Sessions Judge Court in Feni passed the verdict on Monday.
The court sentenced 15 years rigorous imprisonment to six people — Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of police Mahfuzur Rahman, SI Billal Hosen (Absconding), SI Ashikur Rahman (Absconding), Saleh Ahmed, Karim Company, Zafar Company (Absconding).
The court also fined them Tk one lakh.The court sentenced 10 years rigorous imprisonment to six people—Advocate Jakil Hosen, Tofazzal Hosen, SB Shahin, Motaleb Mohuri, Gias Uddin Gesu, Kasem Ali (Absconding).
The court also fined them Tk 50, 000, in default, have to serve four months more in jail.The court also awarded Jabed Ali, the driver of the ASI Mahfuzur Rahman, to 5 years rigorous jail and fined him Tk 50, 000.One of the accused died during trial procedure.
According to the prosecution documents, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-7) in a drive arrested Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mahfuzur Rahman and his car driver Jabed Ali with 6.80 lakh Yaba tablets worth around Tk 27.76 crore from Lalpur area of Feni Sadar upazila on June 21 in 2015.
RAB-7 also seized a private car, about Tk 7 lakh cash, four mobile phone sets, from their possession.Earlier, ASI Mahfuz among five convicts gave confessional statement to court under 168.
