Quota reformists call strike at edn instts for today
Quota reform protesters have called for strike at all educational institutions across the country for today extending their support to the ongoing student movement for safe roads.
Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Odhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad, the platform that launched the movement for quota reform in government jobs, also reiterated their demands for reformation of the quota system and immediate release of arrested protesters.
Joint convener of the parishad Binayamin Mollah announced the strike from a press conference in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka on Friday afternoon.
A statement of the parishad said that they were calling the strike at all educational institutions protesting at attacks on agitating young school students by police and miscreants at Mirpur, Narayanganj, Noakhali, Chandpur and others places.
Binayamin urged the government to meet the nine-point demands of the students immediately.
Angry protests in the streets of the capital and elsewhere in the country continued for the sixth day.
Two students of city’s Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College, Class-XI student Diya Khanam Mim and Class-XII student Abdul Karim Rajib, were killed and 12 others injured as a Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan bus ploughed through a crowd of students in front of Kurmitola General Hospital on Airport Road on Sunday as three buses were allegedly in a race over getting passengers.
Since then students of different educational institutions took to the streets in the capital to press home their demands, including justice for the victims, safe road for all and resignation of shipping minister Shahjahan Khan who wore a smiling face when asked about the deaths of the two students.
The parishad, a platform of students and jobseekers, took to the streets on February 17 and continued protests for reducing quota in government jobs to 10 per cent from existing 56 per cent.
Police arrested a number of quota protesters and took them in their custody while Chhatra League carried out series of attacks on protesters at Dhaka University and Rajshahi University.
Protesters also alleged that government hospitals declined to treat the injured quota activists.
